Role Overview

The Health Communications and Resource Mobilization Officer (HCRMO) will contribute to upgrading and implementing a communications strategy that supports the mission of empowering the healthcare workforce with the knowledge required to sustainably and equitably improve the health and welfare of communities. The fellow will work closely with the Alliance for Healthy Communities (AHC) staff in Kigali and external stakeholders, including government staff, medical officers working at military facilities, and program beneficiaries. The fellow will participate in grant writing and resource mobilization activities. The fellow will collaborate with the rest of the team to generate educational messages for various public audiences.

Responsibilities 

  • Support the AHC team to build a communications strategy
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director and other colleagues to leverage knowledge and resources, ensure consistency of messages, and foster teamwork
  • Collaborate with key program staff to generate health communications messages that are consistent with Ministry of Health (MOH) health communications resources
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate health communication activities designed to impact positive health outcomes
  • Develop strategies and implementation plans for AHC programs for health initiatives and prevention campaigns for the general public and other audiences
  • Apply communication theories and models to health communication campaign development; use audience segmentation analysis and formative research to select appropriate communication channels and messages to achieve positive health outcomes
  • Coordinate and conduct activities related to long and short-term planning including: program design, implementation and evaluation; audience research; and translation and dissemination of scientific information to audiences in a variety of formats
  • Serve as a communications focal-point and facilitate information sharing across programs
  • Participate in development of quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports
  • Spearhead the development of AHC newsletters
  • Actively participate in resource mobilization for the support of the organization’s mission
  • Provide expert knowledge and input on the management of social media, including sharing of success stories

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree*
    • Preferred: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health, communications, external relations, journalism, or related field
  • Experience designing and implementing a communications or campaign strategy, including plans for implementation and evaluation*
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to translate complex scientific information into accessible materials for external audiences, e.g. reports or newsletters*
  • Experience researching the effectiveness of specific communication channels or messages, e.g. through audience segmentation*
  • Team spirit and ethical approaches to problem solving*
  • Understanding of health literacy and usability*
  • Ability to research and evaluate communications-related studies, strategies, and projects*
  • At least two years of professional experience with institutional knowledge management, communications, and/or community engagement
  • Experience in resource mobilization, e.g. writing grant proposals or reports
  • Experience managing an organization’s social media accounts
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with external stakeholders, e.g. government officials, the media, and/or donors
